The drug and fatal weapon found on the floor at the scene of the crime. Once ingested, it causes a rapid acceleration of the metabolism, making the victim act on pure instinct to seek nourishment...which is a more complicated way of saying that they become a zombie.
This seems to be a prototype that uses a specially prepared catalyst to dramatically reduce the time from infection to onset of symptoms. The [trunk] also contained a permit to handle the drug.
